Notes
The spring version of American Zofingen.
Good race. Went out a bit faster than I should have. 1st run pace was probably OK, but the first 1.5 laps of the ride were definitely too fast. After the first lap I was 2 minutes under 8 hour pace, but needed to slow it down: at first just a little because I felt I was getting too sore too early, but later because various leg muscles were threatening to cramp. I took 4 endurolytes each lap and upped the calories. I should have probably supplemented the calories I brought with another bottle of heed on each lap. The third lap I really pulled back, but made sure I kept the legs spinning.
The run was well done and evenly paced. I actually felt best on the last lap and picked up the effort to hold off the person behind me, with whom I traded places throughout laps 2 and 3. I would pass him on the up hills (he walked) while he would pass me on the downhills. I passed him for the last time on the second hard climb on the last lap (rock garden climb).
I may be better off sticking to heed on the run laps. It sat a lot better in my stomach...perhaps going for two heeds at each aid station.
