Only 14 runners I believe. The gun goes off and right away two guys pull ahead of me. We circle the school and head towards the paved trail towards the Y. I start to gain on the guy in 2nd place and end up passing him just before the trail comes to a V. I proceed left and head back towards the High School. I see my Dad in the school parking lot with his hands in the air, wondering why the lead runner hadn't come through yet. Apparently he took a wrong turn on the trail and ended up going down River St and around the block through Springvale which ultimately added about two miles to the run. I keep looking back, nervous that I will be caught as I'm traveling down Main St. and through Gowen's Park and back to the school but there is no one in sight so I sorta took it easy for the final mile. First overall but with an asterisk. Just ask my old man, he'll be glad to tell you that I "won" the race- in huge quotations. The race director awarded dual first placeprizes becasue she felt bad for the other guy. No prize for first anyway. Beer and a burger afterwards at the Publick House made for a pretty good Friday night.
