3-4 x 1600m @ 5k w/ 2:30-3:00 R
Wow, I greatly underestimated this workout. I came in thinking that I could handle 2:00 rest when considering the 1200m repeats I did two weeks ago.
Snowstorm tomorrow, so I definitely had to the workout today. I felt very recovered and the track wasn't covered in snow for once. Did a lengthy warm up and drills to prepare myself. Threshold went well, didn't feel too bad. First mile was where I wanted to be. Even though I didn't feel too tired after the first one, I went with my gut and gave myself longer rest than intended. Turned out to be a good decision because the second one was a lot tougher than the first one. Still finished around the same time, but the effort level ramped up dramatically. Gave myself the full 3 minutes for the last one. Started out much slower, but found myself behind pace, so I sped up again and went through the first 400 in 73. Ugh. Got very tired in just the second lap of the third repeat and my third lap was a 79, so I slowed down a lot. Made up for it on the last lap with a strong finish to close in 5:01.
Overall, I was satisfied with the workout. I wanted to run one more mile, but I knew that it would be disastrous if I attempted the repeat. I also need to pace myself better because I kept going out the first lap in 72's and if I slowed down just a bit, I wouldn't have to deal with the pain train. Still, I was happy to hit sub 5 minute times for workouts. The 18 year old me would have been shocked to see that I'm running his mile PR for workouts.
