Tuxedo Ridge

Notes

Spartan Sprint 2016. 5.2 miles.

One of the most intense races I've ran/walked. Met up at Joe's so we could get our race group together before heading off to Tuxedo Ridge for the race. I didn't eat anything before, thinking that I'll get through this fine without food, which I kinda regret after the race, but I'll get to that later. Arrived at the site later than I expected. Paid nearly 20 dollars for locker/bag rental and then had a very short warm up. Group was me, Slick, Joe, Caroline, and Chris. First obstacle was right before the start and it was to climb up a 5-6' wall. Another note, the course was on a ski area, so there were going to be some insane hill running. The race officials sent out heats of 200 or so every 15 minutes to prevent the course from being congested.

First mile of the race was pretty much all uphill. My group made the right call to walk up at least half it because even if we jogged the whole thing, we still would have been exhausted. Actually, most of the people in our heat would up walking up the first mile or so.

Second, third, and fourth miles were kind of a blur, but I think I remember how the obstacles went. There were some additional walls to climb over, either through, under, and over. We also went into some deep water trenches and climb up hills with muddy feet. There was also one crawling pit where the last half was muddy, so the bottom half of me was soaked. Another one was filling up buckets with aggregates normally used for concrete and climb up and down roughly 400m before placing it back. There was also a javelin range where we had to launch a javelin at a hale batch and if we didn't stick the javelin in, we had to do 30 burpees, which unfortunately I had to do.

Also, while this wasn't an obstacle, there was a guy around the third mile who had a very serious cramp and we stopped to help him out for a bit. We gave him some water and got some medical attention for him and continued on. There was then lifting roughly a 100 pound weight using a pulley system, rope climbing, monkey bars, and rope swinging. Then there was the dreaded wire crawling, which wasn't that hard, but just a really long obstacle. Also, we saw that the guy we helped out before ended up ahead of us and looking much better than he was before. The second to last obstacle was taking a bag of sand and going up and down a hill, roughly 400m. The race concluded with a jump over a horizontal fire pit. So, yes, Muneeb, there was a fire pit, but there wasn't time for roasting a marshmallow.

I was thoroughly exhausted after this race to the point that I didn't even bother for a cooldown. Race took nearly 3 hours despite being only 5 miles. Enjoyed doing this as a team because everyone helped push each other and not let anyone else fall back. Apparently, there is also an 8 and 12 mile Spartan race, which I might wanna do next year when I train my body better for this because I barely cleared the obstacles by the skin of my teeth,
