Notes

I knew coming off pneumonia last week that I shouldn't go into this meet expecting the race of my life, but at the same time I didn't think it would go this poorly. Overall I felt like I was starting to get back into the swing of things this week, but it looks like I need more time before I'm truly back in shape. Before the race, my legs were tight but felt a little better by the time I got to the line. The first mile (around 5:03) felt relatively smooth and "easy" but quickly I found myself off the pack and struggling by myself. I tried to reel in some of the others who fell off but I was thrown out of rhythm each time on the windy home straight. I could tell halfway through this did not feel like race pace, but I didn't have it in me to pick it up.

Some learning outcomes:

1) The 5K feels good at the start but quickly turns tough. Keep this in mind and be ready after the first mile to compete.

2) I need to work on latching to a pack. I should have did all in my power to stay in the main pack at least through 2 miles.

3) Even when you're off the pack/pace, the race isn't over. I'd like to improve my ability to reel people in when the race spreads out.

Although things didn't go my way, I'm happy I raced this week. I think it was important to get some racing experience again even though I'm not at prime fitness yet. I feel more fired up than ever before to train smart and attack the next race. I know this has been a rocky start to outdoor but I am confident I will achieve a breakthrough or two near the end of the season.
