Notes
Hot and humid race. Sweating heavily after just a 1.5 mile warmup. Race started ok, hitting mile 1 in about 5:14, probably about 5 seconds out of 1st/2nd place. Was already starting to feel fatigued. Mile 2 slipped a bunch to 5:30, with TJ creating a good gap on me. My goal was to hold off bugbee.
The next mile was a grind and I continued to struggle, giving back even more pace. TJ remained in sight, which was lucky. We hit the 3 mile mark on the dirt road section with lots of big potholes. Start of mile 4 includes the only big hill of the course, with about a 50 meter steep climb, and then a screamer on the other side. Going up the hill I slowly reeled in TJ, who also appeared to be affected by the weather (not sure if he also raced the USATF race last weekend). As we went down the hill and made the turn, I pulled even with TJ and made a hard push to pass (relatively speaking since I didn't have a ton in the tank to really go hard).
Mile 4 seems to last forever. I kept waiting for the turnaround which never seemed to come. It was a long grind for miles 4 and 5 with the hope that I could hold off TJ. I half expected him to just come screaming by me at the end. I tried to maintain a hard enough effort and keep on working, albeit at a much slower pace than I would have liked. I was able to hold off for 2nd place, even getting 2 runners between me and Bugbee. Will be interesting to see what happens at Paddy's as I will be in Chicago recovery at that point with not much in the legs.
This was tough today, not a good indicator of fitness. My slowest Common Fence Point yet (and final as the race retires today).
