Notes

Some of Liz's old friends are in town and they went out for lunch, leaving me with an open morning/afternoon. Decided to make a return to the mini meets, although nervous given that my repeat pace at track has been a struggle. A few other SRR runners there as well, Joe O. in the mile, Jennifer R in the 3000 and mile, Liz Cooney in the mile, and then a 4x1600 of Jesse, Bradley, Joe, and Mark Duggan.

Seeded myself at 4:44 not sure if this was overly aggressive or if I could pull it off. PR is 4:41 which was in the 3rd mini meet in 2012. In 2013, I don't know if I broke 4:48 for the entire year. Joe ended up seeding himself at 4:45, which is a pretty popular seeding time and was split up into the 5th heat (and me into the 4th). Too bad, could have been fun to work together.

Race started off pretty conservative. Lap one came in around 36 seconds (a bit longer than the other laps since this is a mile not a 1600). I didn't really pay close attention to each lap split, but I think lap 2 had me around 1:11 (1:10 would be 4:40 pace). I was probably around 2:21 for the halfway split. Lap 6 is where I really started feeling the fatigue. I was probably holding 4th place at this point but finally lost contact with the runner ahead of me and probably had a couple pass me over the last 3 laps. No idea what my splits were, I was just trying to survive. I knew coming into the final 100 meters that I had runners ready to pounce so I was able to put in a little kick but nothing too impressive. Held off all attackers and closed out around 4:43. Official results haven't been posted yet. *** Official results now have 4:44.

Overall pretty happy considering it's my fastest mile in about 2 years. Would still love to go sub 4:40 but need to do some more races at this distance and some more repeat paced workouts. This is a start anyway, hopefully can get those legs moving a little faster next time.

Joe had an amazing kick over his last couple of laps to top last week's time and beat out some of his rivals. I may have been the prey if we were in the same heat.

It's definitely fun to come out and do these meets. Biggest downside is the length, with the meet starting at 10 and my mile heat not starting until close to noon. The relay, with a start time of no earlier than 1:30 probably wasn't going to begin until 2:30. Fun watching everyone though, especially some of those kids who were pretty young and still going out to race the mile and 400.
