Notes

Second to Scott Gall, formerly a 2:20 marathoner and 5th in the world for mountain running a decade ago. He also ran a 1:08 half recently and I did keep him to about 2.5 minutes. We started, despite starting with the 5k and 10kers he took the lead and I in second as we vaulted up the first hill and he snagged the $50 prize for getting up it first. Then he slowed and I caught him and passed him on the down hill and led through the historical section. He caught up around 3.5 and going into the second major hill 3.8 ish he had helium in his shoes and ascended quite fast and was basically out of sight the rest of the run. Around mile 9 he had a two minute lead going into the turn around and I had about 1:40 on third place. Good race. Tiring! It's one thing to run moderate up a hill at 8 minute pace or jog up it at 9 minute pace, it another to tear up a hill at 7 minute pace! I went anaerobic on the second major hill around mile 4, the hill going into the horseshoe bluff and then coming out of the river trail around mile 10. Tough! A really good training stimulus though, I need more intensity in my training and this certainly qualifies. Plus, getting beat by a 39 year old is better than if he was 40, and he does have quite the resume.
