Notes

Had a very slow transition at 4:47. I really don't know why I was so slow. I'd be better served working on my transition before working on my swimming...

I've got a bit of a bike background but this was going to be interesting. Three weeks before the race I bought my first Tri/TT bike. I've had some experience with aero bars but not the 30-50 mile long ride kind. The week before the race I got a new seat and struggled to find the sweet spot after several adjustments. Going in I was worried I'd cripple myself on the bike over 56 miles. Also, biking over the summer was so so. I had only three rides of at least 50 miles and didn't feel in my best biking shape. Lots of anxiety over how things would go.

Ride went well but rarely found a rhythm due to all the passing and later due to the fatigue of so much time in the aero position. After about 30 miles I just couldn't stay in the position. This was due to my lack of time with the bike and minimal riding at longer distances. Still, the bike is faster even riding on the base bars than my road bike so it was still good.

The course was much hillier than I had trained for. Pre riding it would have been good. That would have helped me to have spent my energy more efficiently.

Passing was a pain. All the passing was the biggest detractor for the race for me. I passed a large group and crossed the double yellow line and got a yellow card. Never mind that the group was basically drafting each other!

Got some garbage stuck up under my front brake and had to stop from 20 mph to pull it out. Between this and the penalty I lost my over 21mph average.

In the end 20.9 was solid for a ride on a new bike, on a new course, on hills, undertrained, etc... I wouldn't have done that on my road bike. I've got lots of room for improvement and having lots of room for improvement on this time is good.
