Notes

Planned: w/4M @ 15K to half marathon pace.

Executed: w/5M @ half marathon pace.

I ran the first 4 miles as a warm-up with Cielo from DJ along Perrine Rd, Black Gum to the 2 mile turnaround at Krebs and back. Cielo went inside and I took off for the LT portion of the run. When I began the fifth mile, I was already 2/10th of a mile into it at a slower pace, so that detracted from my pace making it 7:47.

I took the other miles faster, but I didn't feel they were fast enough. I pushed them at my previous marathon pace, but I couldn't easily squeeze much more out of them; I was probably fatigued from the 100s of kicks in karate class this morning, plus there was wind from the west which slowed down miles 6 and 7. Mile 8 was a "catch my breath" mile after cresting the hill and facing the wind at 7:11, otherwise I would have done it 5 - 8 seconds faster. Then I pulled out a 7:06 for mile nine.

I feel as though miles at this pace were easier to run at the Philadelphia marathon (at least the first 13 - 16). I guess I should remember that back then I was at the height of my training, I was tapered, and the excitement of the race probably elevated my adrenaline level. I had none of that going for me today. Still, it always seems that these training miles are harder than race miles of equivalent pace.

I know exactly what you mean! I feel the exact same way all the time in training. Especially on tempo runs. I'll be doing a tempo at 7:20ish pace and think this is pretty tough, meanwhile that Rutgers 9.6 I did 7:20 and I felt like I could have gone harder. Races are definitely different than training. Good work today! Looking forward to tomorrow morning.
