I’m not necessarily happy with the time but overall content with this race. This is like 40 seconds faster than my time last year but quite a bit slower than my 5k/6k paces that I was able to do in September/October/November. The weather probably plays a part for sure but I don’t know how much I should contribute to that. I think the course got harder and more hilly in the later two miles but I also shouldn’t have went out as fast probably. I tried my best though so I am okay with it. Beat my high school xc coach and some other locals that I wanted to flex on so I am happy about that. Super happy Brianna was able to come and help me dodge people I went to high school with! Then we got free burgers at the awards and found out I was fourth female overall, and we got 1st and 2nd in our age group!
It was at that moment that we decided to get plastered. Like the degenerates we are, we didn’t even change and just went out to the bars all gross and sweaty and smelly in our race clothes, bibs and all. We both had free beers from completing the race but then finessed another one each. Then we basically went bar hopping all downtown Morris and had a grand old time. Got star spangled SMASHED but had so much fun. Sadly realized we weren’t in Champaign anymore and we had like a 2 mile walk home & there’s no Uber or anything here. Somehow made it home by the dawns early light with full hearts and full bladders. God bless America.
I’ve struggled with enjoying running recently and it’s felt like a chore every day. This race was a good reminder that I run for myself and because I want to. It should be something fun that I enjoy and it’s ok to enjoy it and not be too serious about it all the time. Hope to do at least one more 5k this summer and 10k too
