Maui

Notes

We'll start with a run log and finish it with the travel log to keep this organized.

Run:

Solid interval workout today (5x800m with 200m rest) given that my legs and bum were pretty sore. Gotta get used to hard runs on sore legs to make the fresh runs better I guess. Not sure if that's a solid philosophy or not but it sorta worked in hs. I drove to a park on the ocean down the road that had nice open fields (a mix of baseball and soccer mostly) that I figured I could use for a makeshift interval workout. Apparently there's only one track in Maui and it's a half hour drive so that didn't seem worth it. This park worked great - it wasn't busy and the views were gorgeous. I warmed up around the beach sidewalk and park and scoped out a loop that got me to about .5 miles so I used that to put together a 5x800 workout with 200m jogging rest (no stopping). I just kept running in circles and followed my GPS distance so it didn't need to be .5 on the dot. The loop was about a third grass, a third beach sidewalk, and a third parking lot. I think continuous running for interval workouts is the way to go when training for really long races like half marathons and marathons. I put together some solid times and I really surprised myself with how well I was able to recover and how quick my 800s were. Now, it could've been slightly off since I was going off of my watch but it's usually pretty close. It definitely felt like 5:30 pace or under. It was a total of 3 miles of intervals and rest and the whole thing took 18 minutes! Not bad, kid! I think I could've done a few more intervals but I had to get back for breakfast reservations and you can't go all out on every workout so I think this was still a win. Cooled down 2 miles after. No ocean dunk today.

Vacation:

No pizza last night rip. We walked past a bunch of stuff before settling on some health foods market with a little restaurant in it. Not sure if restaurant is the right word. They just had a menu and some chicks make it for you then you pay at the grocery clerk and take it home. I got a turkey cheddar pesto panini and it was fire so I guess we made up for the lack of pizza. The guy who rung us up said hope you have a nice visit and I said you too so I immediately booked a cab to the airport and flew as far away from that island as possible. Gonna have to start a new life after that one.

Today is our last day in Kihei and I think that feels appropriate. I'm excited to see the road to Hana and stay on the fruit farm the rest of the week. We had our morning beach coffee, then I ran my weekly hard workout, then we walked to brunch at this restaurant on the beach. It was our most expensive meal yet but super worth it. The view was great and the food was pretty unique and good. Claire had a baked pancake and I had this skillet plate with a burger patty, 2 eggs, fried onions, gravy, potatoes and pico. I was super stuffed and on the walk back I thought about the arguments I had with Jake and Paul in Washington about how much they could eat. They would've said shit like they could eat three of those skillets by themselves. Doubtful. After that we just sort of laid around at the condo and the beach for a while knowing we were gonna do some intensive activity the rest of the week so why not. Finished with tacos at coconut's fish cafe for dinner that were so overflowing it was just impractical. Once you start folding them half the shit just falls out. Delicious though. Saw the sunset at the beach after and then packed for the early start of the road to Hana. Gonna have to improvise tomorrow with when my run will be but we'll figure it out
