Leap Day 5K

Notes

Decided all this poor racing was in my head and wanted to run hard today. I saw a few good runners so I took off with the leaders. It was windy for the race but nothing too horrible. A group of 3 of us went through the mile in about 5:06. I knew we were moving but was happy with the split. Around 1.5 I could feel myself falling backwards. I tried to be tough and force it but I couldn't. At this point I let the 2 leaders go. I can never tell anymore in races what is physical and what is mental. I hit 2 at 10:40, so I knew I was going backwards but thought I could salvage something. Then 3rd place came by me and I figured I could work off him to make it in but I couldn't. I finished in a disappointing 4th with another 17 min 5K. My blood sugar was 103 before the start and 250 after. I guess my diet isn't helping as much as I was hoping. It did have me drop about 3 pounds since I started it but my legs still were full of sand by the end. If I have to accept I am a 17 min 5ker I am ok with that, but I am not going to train 60 plus miles a week and work hard to be that slow. I am going to do an all out practice 5K next week and see how much the blood sugar is on effort or racing. At this point I am done racing for awhile. It is no longer close to being fun or worth while.
