walked first fifteen minutes with Guido Ferrari (who has done this race every year--this is the first year he didn't make cutoff to go to Mt Mitchell); put on yaktrax at 3.3 miles when entering snowy & icy trails; lots of walking to the Blue Ridge Parkway since most of route was uphill; ate chips, bananas, grapefruit at aid stations; drank water, gatorade, coke; carried camelbak with 1 liter of water--tube froze until I learned from other runner to tuck it into my jacket to keep it warm enough; ramen noodle soup at turnaround; ran more on the way down but still took walking breaks at uphills and when I felt I needed them; leg muscles, esp. calves, became twitchy, so stopped to stretch every mile or so; took yatrax off at mile 21.x when leaving trails; after steep downhill, switched to 4 minute run:1 minute walk routine; GPS distance/time: 25.86 miles/6:12:49.14
