Notes

Easily my worst race in a long time. Weather conditions were not that great, cold and rain and some wind, 47 degrees, but this was no excuse. Everything seemed to go wrong.

I got in Glasgow in plenty of time and found parking a half mile from the start. I did a 2.5 mile warmup with the plan to add about another half mile with strides. When I got to the start, I had approached from the wrong end and had to walk and weave my way through a thousand? runners to the start. By this time I had cooled down and no time for strides.

Knowing I wasn't properly warmed up and with the start up a long steep hill, I ran conservatively, hoping to get into pace after the first mile. To make matters worse, i was wearing the wrong shoes. I didn't realize that Adidas Clima Cool had air holes on the bottom of the shoes, so my feet/socks were getting soaked even though by this time, the rain was slowing down. Never wear these shoes in rain again!!!

After the 6:52 opening mile, I thought I would be in mid 6:30's, but I couldn't get the legs to turn over.My breathing was not at 10K effort. More like tempo effort. I couldn't get it going. I knew by 2 miles, my goal of a sub 41:00 was out the window. And when I hit the 5K in 21:00 flat, I knew getting under 42 was going to be a challenge.

The last 400, I tried to kick in, but the last 200, my glutes and hamstrings just shut down and I slowed down. This has never happened before. Hopefully, this is a one-off. I have always come back with a good race after a bad one as it motivates me even more. So hopefully pay back time at the Bay State Half Marathon in 3 weeks.
