Notes

It was great weather for a run. I made the good decision to start near the front so that I wouldn't get stuck behind a bunch of people before hitting the monocacy pathway. The first mile was much slower than I wanted, but I was near the front and nobody really fast was out front, so I was wondering if people were holding back because they knew something about the course that I didn't. But, look at my watch I saw that if I didn't speed up I wouldn't have a chance at setting a PR or even breaking 19 minutes, so I sped up a bit and took the lead (yes, unbelievable as it sounds) at around the 1.25 mile mark, just before getting onto the monocacy trail. I half was thinking I was going to get run down along there or in the last mile. So I tried to maintain as fast a pace as I could on the pathway (which was too gravelly). I was even slower than I wanted to be after mile 2 and I knew breaking 18 would be out of the question. But, my last mile and one tenths was the fastest and is where I made up some time. My last mile was around 5:40 to get me a PR by about 20 seconds. And, I won the 5K event. But, all the fast people must have either taken the day off, were on vacation, or were down visiting Pope Francis because my time has to be the slowest 5K winning time in the history of the event by well over a minute.
