Notes

San Diego 100 Mile Endurance Run.

I entered the Solo Division, which means no pacer and no crew for the duration of the race.

The course was very sun exposed and more rocky than I anticipated. Not as much ascent and descent as Western States though it felt just as hard.

I again started out very conservative and was glad I did as it started to heat up during the day. I was running along the PCT (probably the most scenic part of the course) during the hottest hours. I did good with the sunscreen though.

One major difference this year was that I had no GI distress. I had some gas of course and felt some nausea at points but nothing like last year where I had to stop to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes and walk slowly to inhibit the sensation to go to the bathroom.

I had a hot spot on my right foot treated at the mile 56 aid station. I was glad I had the foresight to get that taken care of early rather than later, though at the cost of spending more time at that aid station.

I didn't really roll my ankles, though the copious rocks do make your feet and ankles move this way and that, but my ankles and bottoms of feet were really hurting by 60 miles in. Ankles cramped after the race pretty bad and I had to lie on a cot in the medical tent for a while while icing them.

I felt like I had a pretty strong last 20 miles or so. I really felt the urge to 'get it done' around then and just wanted it over with, so I started running more when I could. Lot of uphill running in the last 12 miles, though.

Ran with the vest on again with 2 12oz bottles and carrying either 1 16oz handheld or 1 20oz handheld along the way. I think I consumed 16 gels throughout the event in addition to eating mainly peanut butter/jelly sandwiches, pretzels, potatoes dipped in salt, chicken/vegetable broth, and bananas. I also took an enduralyte/salt stick cap every 30 minutes and 1 MAP pill every hour about. Not sure if the MAP pills did anything, though. At night, the headlamp seemed worthless and rather the new flashlight I got was better in that I could shine it on the ground where I was running and see better. I ended up taking the headlamp off sometime after mile 72.

Because of the ankles, it looks like I will have to be taking some time off running again like last year, probably for at least the rest of the month.
