Notes

---Was stripped of my Lake Murray title and was passed in a non-race (haven't raced since Sept. 2004) for just the third time since I moved to San Diego (June 2004).---

Drove out to Lake Murray with Rachel and ran while she walked roughly 2.40 miles. I went out way too fast today, hitting the first mile in 7:42. I remember thinking, “What the hell are you thinking?” I am in no shape to run that fast for any mile right now, let alone a first mile. Part of it was me having three days off (I guess I wanted to run one of those, but did golf one), part of it was me talking to Rachel about how I was undefeated there and part of it was me feeling pretty good. But I started feeling it early and looked at my watch to see 0.22 miles.

I looked over my shoulder late in the first mile and saw a guy in blue gaining on me. I knew that he’d catch me and instantly felt pathetic that I would lose my title here, having never lost here at Lake Murray. He ended up passing me around 1.72 miles and did the smart thing as he blew by me, holding his breath and moving right along. I tried to stay with him a bit, but I knew that would be stupid given my shape and weight. Plus, I only felt semi-good by that point. I hit the second mile in 15:26 (so a 7:45 second).

I kept seeing the guy in the blue shirt pulling away. He was probably going around 7:15 to 7:20 pace or so, but it was hard to tell. He was older than me, but had all the sweet running gear (short shorts, dry fit shirt, some kind of a head band that also held in his earphones). I ended up seeing him on the way back and he picked it up even more as he passed me coming my way. But I’ll give it to him, I’m about two months away from that. I ended up slugging to the halfway point, hitting the fence in 19:51 (so 7:45 pace over the next 0.57 miles).

I thought about stopping at the halfway point, but knew that Rachel was going to most likely be waiting since I told her go out 20 minutes and come back. I slogged back and saw a guy in brown with headphones moving pretty good, despite looking like he had a stick up his ass. “Fuck,” I thought. He’s going to get me. I hit the three-mile mark in 23:14 (7:48 from the second to the third).

I kind of just gave up then and half expected the brown-shirt-guy-with-a-stick-up-his-ass to pass me at any moment, but I took a look back around the 3.62-mile mark and saw that I might be able to hold him off. I felt like crap, but hit four miles in 31:02 (7:48 fourth mile) and was hoping to just finish without stopping.

I got over the final little uphill (actually a bunch of small rolling hills there over most of the last mile) around 4.40 miles and tried to pick it up, but I could feel the lactic acid building up in my legs and a possible dry-heave coming. I scrambled to the fifth mile in 38:51 (7:49) and could see Rachel walking ahead.

I semi-kicked in, but really not because I was afraid of dry-heaving. I passed her at 5.07 miles, gave her a small wave and then dry-heaved at 5.08 miles. I finished and dry-heaved again, closing the final 0.13 miles in a blistering 7:34 pace. Hah!

Ended up going 19:51 out, 19:59 back. Rachel was 10 seconds after me and the brown-shirt-guy-with-a-stick-up-his-ass came by maybe another 7-8 seconds after that. Luckily I always run the same loop there (~5.13 miles, but then sometimes add on some more) and mostly run the whole thing (~6.20 miles) or I would have had another loss.

The bad is that I got beat in a non-race run for the first time ever at Lake Murray and just the third time since I moved out here in June 2004. Plus, I probably should have been beaten by the brown-shirt-guy-with-a-stick-up-his-ass.

The good is that I ran this loop 1:48 faster than 22 days ago, despite having the same average heart rate and max heart rate. I also haven’t had that much consistency in between. Need to go easy tomorrow.

Song: Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd), thanks to someone playing it out loud on the run
