Notes

Pretty good one to end indoor on. Looking back on the season I would say that it didn't go quite how I wanted and I failed to meet my main goal of sub 4:40 mile. Perhaps I overestimated what I could actually throw down but I am happy I could run a decent 3k anyway. Ultimately the best thing about this race was being able to set a goal and then accomplish it.

splits were super uneven today but I think that that was for a couple reasons - a) because its conferences and b) because of a general lack of experience in the event. It certainly felt better than the OWU 3k but a big reason for that is probably because of a taper this week. The first 6-7 laps felt super easy and then by lap 10 I was in a world of pain. Sucks to have the second to last lap be the slowest overall. A lot of time can be made up in those last few laps and that is something that I will have to continue to work on.

A couple key takeaways from indoor, things I should think about going into outdoor:

1) Don't be a slave to mileage : I don't think that I'm quite at a point where 70 mile weeks feel normal. There were too many workouts this year and a few races where I just felt like my legs were completely dead and I wasn't able to run to the best of my ability. I definitely want to continue 9 - 10 mile distance runs and 15 - 16 mile long runs, but I think that taking off days more often or just doing 2-3 mile premeet days will help alleviate the dead leg sort of feeling. I would be a lot happier hitting 55-60 miles/week during outdoor if I can run some better times. Summer will be a time to get used to 70 mile weeks, and maybe higher if I feel able to do that.

2) Focus on one event : This is something that I did well in outdoor last year, running almost exclusively 1500s. Being able to run the same event each week helped me to become used to the feeling of the event. I was able to consistently improve week by week because of the ability to learn from each race. This indoor season I bounced around a little too much and might've had better results if I focused more on the 3k or on the mile. I think that with the aerobic base I have built it would be best for me to focus on the 5k this outdoor season, and will probably throw in a few 1500s to work the time down.
