Notes

Thought this would be a good PR race...don't really know why it wasn't.

Tried to keep up w/Deanna...looked at Garmin twice in the first mile...said we were running a 6:30 pace...way too fast for me, but I was too stupid to slow down.

Her first mile was probably about 6:30, so that didn't work out too well for me- DAMMIT!!!. Most of first mile was also into a pretty strong headwind.

I felt the stomach burning, need to throw up feeling starting at about the first half mile...and it didn't get any better.

After first mile I was just hanging on for life...most of 2nd mile was a long hill. At about the halway mark I saw that a 13 yr old kid was still in front of me, but maybe within reach.

Saw the leaders at the loop and it looked like Deanna was 5th overall at that point, then the kid, then me.

The kid took the inside of a turn cone for the home stretch and cut a good 15 yards off his distance. No one was monitoring it, but I went on the outside, and knew it would be that much tougher to catch the little guy.

I knew the finish would be ugly but tried to reel him in the best I could. At about the 3 mile mark, he still had about 30 yards on me so I did what would loosely be called a kick and passed him...about that time I saw the clock said XX.38, and I was REALLY hoping the XX was 21, but DAMN! 22...

I crossed the finish and bent over dry heaving...had about 4 waves of that, and at the same time the kid I passed is beside me crying. I felt proud...especially when the awards announcer made the comment - "It's all about the kids".

Although I think the kid got over it pretty quickly when he thought I was actually dying.

I congratulated him on a good race and he told me he had ran two half marathons. Wow!

The good news - FIRST PLACE IN MY AG!! This is the first time ever...woo hoo!
