Rock climbing in Santa Barbara. (Fire crags and Gilbrater rock)

What a crazy, difficult, fun, scary day. This is my (our, heather's) first time really climbing outdoors… alone. Here are some of the things we noted:

1) Ratings are totally different than in a gym. Way harder.

2) Hand holds and foot chips are smaller than one would think possible

3) SEEING the next hold is half the challenge

4) Hiking to the climbing spot is half the fun - like a treasure hunt with even more adventure once you find it

5) Lead climbing can be just as terrifying as it is cool looking. I spent most of "The Rapture" on Gibralter rocks trying to calm myself down.

6) Sometimes you'll have to leave gear

7) Rope friction is a way bigger deal than it sounds

8) Anchor systems - do them and do them right

9) Shmearing your foot against the wall is considered a foot hold

10) The rope will tangle itself any and every chance it gets. Mucho precaution must be taken to assure knot prevention
