Notes
Wacky 5k in Chicago. I signed up for this race because the winter running club at middle school I teach at was doing it too (I coached the kids in xc but someone else does the running club). It was a pretty fun race... my time was maybe a little slow but about what I expected. Temps were mild thankfully but it was quite windy.
I ran in the "lead pack" for about a half mile until a random guy wearing soccer shorts at belly-button level with his shirt tucked in and what I believe were Saucony cross country spikes took the lead. After that I decided to take the lead. Another guy decked out in a full matching Ukranian national kit and I shared the lead for the next two miles, with a couple guys right behind us. There were two cop cars leading us through the course so it was fun being in the front. With about 1/4 mi left to go another guy who had been sitting on my shoulder the whole race put in a big surge and won (he was obviously racing for the "w"). I came in a few seconds behind for 2nd place. All in all it was a classic smal-time road race! Full results to follow if they ever post them online.
