Most of my family was doing this race just like last year so I went to it before heading to U of C for the Aurora meet. Noticed at the start line that the guy who won the New Year's day race was there so I knew he was at least good so I took it out hard. I ended up leading the entire race with this guy sitting just a step or 2 behind me. He was foreign so he didn't really have the best manners but I could tell it's just because he didn't know. Went through in 4:45 and 9:55 for the 1 and 2 mile but then we turned into the wind and it slowed us both down. Threw in some serious moves to try and break the guy but he hung on every time and barely got me at the line. Unfortunately, he ended up throwing up the ones and had a victory celebration at the end of the race...if this was a serious race I wouldn't have cared but he sat on me the entire time and then pulled that shit at the end. I'm happy with the time since I ran a whole minute faster than I did last year when I won the race and I did all of the work which was great from a mental toughness standpoint, but that guy is a super douche so screw him. My dad's serious training paid off and he went from a 34:13 to a 23:23 so I was super pumped for him. By far the best moment of the day, and the rest of my family ran well too so overall a good day!
