Very cold morning. 37 deg with 33 real feel. Wore long tights, long sleeves, gloves and a beanie for the workout.
Workout: 3 miles warmup, 6 miles at 5:40/5:20, 1-2 miles cooldown.
Workout was to alternate miles at marathon pace with faster than marathon pace. The goal was to make sure I hit 5:40s for the slower miles. The first mile at 5:40 felt pretty smooth and comfortable. The next mile, faster than MP, felt okay, but not a walk in the park. It was not very easy going from 5:40, which felt comfortable, to 5:20. After the fast mile, the first lap of the slower mile would feel a bit tough, but I would then settle back in at 5:40 pace. I ran 5:40, 5:39 and 5:37 for the slow miles and 5:21, 5:23, and 5:23 for the fast miles. I didn't quite hit 5:20, but I also didn't want to push too hard since the main goal was 5:40s.
Overall, it was a good workout and built some mental toughness.
