Notes
Ok. Really hilly run. Not a lot of people signed up, but I could tell before we started that there were a couple people in the race that could be really fast.
The start was kinda just a count down and go. I started in like 6th place, but there was a 9 year old in front of me. I knew he wouldn't last. The rest I was unsure of.
Moved into 5th at about 1/4 mile. Then hit the big down hill. I just kinda hung on going as fast as I could. There were parts where I just couldn't let myself go cuz it was too steep. I pulled away from a guy behind me going down, but just couldn't quite reel in the guy in front of me.
Hit the bottom, and started working my way back up. Older guy passed me on the first big uphill, and a gal passed me as well. I worked my way up trying to stay relaxed and strong. Got the gal back about 1/3rd of the way up. The two guys in front of me just kinda kept pulling away.
Worked my way to the top, and ran it in.
Then I walked/jogged back to find Jessica. Ran with her a bit starting at the top of the hill... Then I let her finish up down the hill and went back to get Steph.
Got Steph at the top of the hill as well. We were running pretty decent, and there was an older guy that I thought maybe we could catch. At the top of the last rise with maybe just over 400 to go, he passed out. Someone else was with him, so I sprinted to the finish to get him some help. Steph finish up fine. My wife went up to check on him (she's a nurse) and I walked back up. the guy that was with him turned out to be his son who was also a nurse doing CPR. It took forever for the ambulance to get there, and they had very little sense of urgency. They hit him twice with an AED with no response... They threw him in the ambulance and then met Care Flight. We are pretty sure he wasn't going to make it... :-( Such a massive bummer.
That kinda put a damper on the finish of the race for the back of the pack. Steph didn't get a time. They closed the road. It was a mess. I overhead them say they had 19 runners that didn't finish or were unaccounted for. I dunno. I think they were poorly prepared for anything like that to happen... Sucks....
