Notes

If you just looked at the numbers from this workout it would be far from impressive. I would actually be pretty upset with myself if, under normal circumstances, I was running 2:50 for 800m repeats. The thing is, this wasn't normal circumstances. Because my work schedule is little different this week, I knew I would have time for a workout this afternoon, so I skipped the normal Thursday morning run at NCC in lieu of an afternoon track workout. If only I had looked at the weather! Little did I know, it was supposed to snow all afternoon (not to mention the brisk wind). As the snow started to come this afternoon, I realized that I had made a mistake. Yet, I couldn't back down from my workout. I needed the mileage. So I decided that at 4pm, regardless of weather, I was going to head out for my workout. I parked right next to the high school track with my duffle bag filled with about 3 different changes of clothes. My warm up started straight into the wind and I wanted to stop after about 18 seconds. I got through it though and was able to start my intervals. I don't think I've ever done a track workout in half tights over pants with a compression top, mittens and a hat on. That outfit doesn't exactly scream "speed!" Believe it or not, I actually got in to a little rhythm about 600m into my mile but it was all downhill from there. The rain/snow/sleet/wintery mix (I really don't know what to call it) made looking straight forward impossible and wind was blowing straight down the backstretch. I just focused on matching my footprints from the previous interval, having to shuffle occasionally to break a clump of slush off of my racing flats. The footing for each interval got trickier and trickier. By the time my workout was done, there was a solid 1/4 inch of snow (slush, really) on the track and most of my footprints were being refilled quickly. I threw on a dry set of clothes and went out for my cooldown. After I got home, I threw in some laundry, took a shower and by the time I headed out to the grocery store it was done snowing...oh well. This workout probably has very little physical benefit but I know the mental benefit will be huge.
