Notes

Such a fun race! I mean, yeah I dropped out at 19.5 miles, but eh. Young guy took off at the start and I left him alone right away. I ran way too fast first mile (7:20), but the guy in first was way ahead by then. By the end of mile 2 I had found a group to run with in second place. It was me, Adam, Nick, and Pete. We ran together in harmony and conversation until about mile 15. I felt heavy right after the start today, with over a liter in my bag and 20oz of water in my bottle, along with 3 gatorade chews and 3 Crank gels in my pockets. I started noticing around mile 7 that I was going through more water than I anticipated by wasn't feeling fully hydrated (even though I pounded water all morning). When we got to checkpoint 1 (mile 10.5) my legs were starting to feel a little fatigued and I had drank through my bottle and had been sipping from my pack on-and-off for 2 miles. I took a gel as a came into the checkpoint, pounded some water, filled my bottle, drank 10oz, re-filled my bottle, took a pee, and then met up with the guys to keep going. I was SO thirsty. But by now my stomach was starting to cramp from all the water. I had to keep drinking though, because my lips were dry and I was thirsty and still 15 miles from the finish. Temperature was over 80 degrees under full sun and a wind at our back (the worst kind in the summer). By mile 15 my legs were starting to blow up and I was still going through a lot of water. At this point I decided to make it my goal to make it to the second checkpoint. After a 4 mile death march where continuing to move was one of the greatest challenges of my life, I arrived at checkpoint 2 and dropped out. The volunteers there told me later that I looked pale when I came in.

Takeaways:

-I did this race two years ago, and my legs started dying in the same exact mile, but it was cooler that year and I could tough it out.

-No matter how much water I drank, I couldn't stay hydrated, but my stomach cramped from how much I drank

-I had so much fun running with those guys

-The guy who took off fast never finished and the guys in my group finished 1-2-3.

-I did my best and have no complaints. I chased my goal and came up short. I was on 4-hour pace until about mile 15, but couldn't finish.

Good write-up and great race effort! Pretty impressive in that unrelenting heat and sun. Hope you enjoyed your travels back to the east coast.
