Mile PR! 5:15.41.
This was the easiest mile trial I've ever run. I usually run these on the sidewalk, but decided I'd do it on the track just to have a good time on record there. I thought it would help me to run more even splits. I didn't have a hard goal, but I thought 5:20 wouldn't be TOO conservative. I planned on running the first quarter in 1:22, and being on pace for a 5:20 by the end of lap 3, then seeing if I could better it. My first lap was too fast by two seconds. I could see even after 100 meters I was ahead of pace, but I couldn't seem to back off in a steady manner. It felt really easy. With almost two laps down I felt like I was barely working. The third lap had me breathing hard, but not worried about the pace. I was basically right on pace for 5:20 at the end of it. The fourth lap felt like the third lap normally does during a mile trial. It was hard, but not gut-busting. I cut a lot of time off of it, but still, it was not possible to spend all the energy I saved in the first three laps. This was a 5:15 that could have been 5:10 or better if I had gone for it. Now I know.
I probably should have tried to average 1:18 for the first three instead of 1:20. I might go for 5:00 at the end of the summer if I feel like my training has moved me up a level. Ugh. I swallowed a lot of gnats on this run.
