Notes

A good day on the trail! I was so nervous going into this race. I have been sore and tired and still am several lbs over any sort of passable racing weight. Also, Wendell told me the day before the race that this was the 2nd hardest course in his series (5800 ft of climb in the marathon). Sigh. However, the day dawned bright, warm and sunny which put me in a very fine mood and things went surprisingly well. Diane and Sydney and I started together and stayed together on the first climb even though Syd struggled a bit. I planned this day to be just a training run, not a race, so no problems going slowly on the first 3.5 mile climb. Easy back down too since Diane's foot was already hurting a bit. The second and third climbs went well too and I was feeling comfortable and good. As we started the big climb the 2nd time around Diane was feeling kind of bad. On the way back down the hill I lost her near the bottom. She had already decided to stop at 20 so I was not concerned. I pushed the last 6 miles as hard as I could (which did not result in much of an uptick in speed I regret to say) but I did finish feeling strong and felt I could have gone farther. Most unfortunately I was beaten by someone named "Hamster Bob"...
