65-75 in the field. Matt Pfau, myself and young Essner, a HS teammate of Matt's are off to the side in front of about 20 kids. We will run around the ball field on the blacktop drive then out to the road for the rest of the race. Matt says it will take us most of the initial loop to "shake loose" the kids in front of us. Good guess as it takes us about 2/3 of the loop prior to both of us taking the point.
He takes off and is well ahead of me at the mile mark in the race. I hit the split at 6:04; perfect and am just cruising along trying not to punch it down any faster. After an initial quarter mile climb, we are now going down hill until we hit the turnaround point (1.65 mile mark). I figure many people are going to be cussing as we move back up the nearly one mile incline during the back half of the race.
Matt is gone and probably 75 seconds ahead of me at the turnaround (couldn't see him as it was around a curve). Mile 2 split of 6:03; damn I am on today and proud of myself for not getting crazy and moving past my LT threshold. The second half of mile 2 and the first half of mile three is all incline and having to work some but go through 3 mile split at 6:11 pace. Finished at 5:23 pace as decided to get one good strider in at the end.
Overall, a nice smooth effort with some good hill climbing at LT threshold pace in some humid conditions.
Matt Pfau - 28 y/o 16:45 finish = 16:45 age-graded with performance of 77:51%
Kevin Hammes - 51 y/o 18:40 finish = 16:18 age-graded with performance of 79:64%.
Folks, the numbers do not lie. The Old Man beats the youngster in the race doing a 10K effort trial in the middle of his weekly long run. Nearly 30 second "win" age-graded.................
Matt wins the race for the 4th straight year. The old man wins the age-graded competition.
CBEGM co-founder schools some people in his race this morning and takes home the OA title so both of the club presidents do their job at dropping the Grandmaster hammer on the competition.
