Notes

Second race in the series, first time running it for me as I sat the one out last week. I was going to run it as a tempo run at the very most, I had no intentions of running for a PR or running it as a race or hard. So I went out for the first mile behind Gary and Todd and let Daniel and other speedy contenders run ahead. I figured 6:00/mile would be where I wanted to be. The beauty of the Trinity 5000 is that the course is flat, fast, accurate, out and back with every quarter mile marked so running even and accurate pace is super easy. It is the perfect venue for speedwork short of going to a 400 meter track. I was loking at my pace and I knew that I was on 5:50 pace by the first quarter mile but it felt good and easy so I stuck with it.

After the first mile the next two quarter miles were right at 6:00/mile pace as I kept running behind Todd and breathing down his neck. We had one more guy with us at this point. I didn't know whether he was in my AG or not and I had no idea whether he was racing full on or running it as a training run like I was. So I did the nasty thing and dropped a 5:10/mile surge on him right at the turnaround. He hung on for a little while so I dropped another 5:00/mile surge on him and that did him in and fell back. After the two surges I kept pace even again and ran smooth and easy until the last 0.1 mile where I kicked it hard to the finish especially after I saw that I had a chance at breaking 18 in a training run. Official time was 17:57, first in my age group and 4th or 5th overall.

It was a fun run in the 93 degree heat, let's do it again next week, I might go for it there if my ankle feels good.
