Notes

Well this one sucked! I actually went in with high hopes of breaking 17 minutes on a legitimate 5K for the first time but it just wasn't happening. My plan was to run 81 second quarter miles which would have gotten me 16:50 for the race and I thought I had a fair chance running that. The first quarter was 75 which was way ahead of schedule and I was in the lead. Then a guy passed me which helped me with the pace and I just stuck with him and we went through the half mile mark at 2:36 which meant we ran 81 seconds for the second quarter and I felt fine. Then another guy passed me and I tried to hang with him and we both passed the guy that was ahead of me before. The guy in the lead was someone I knew very well, we raced the series together in the same AG last yar but this year I'm above him as he's 3 years younger than me and I mobed up in the AG so I knew that he was no thread to my AG position. We got to the turnaround and I still felt fine and I was on his tail the whole time thinking that I'll just run there then try to outkick him at the end as he kept slowing down and only pushed it as I got closer to him.

But after the turnaround (8:07) I was already fading and things just got harder and worse on the way back. The other guy passed me and I was in 3rd place. I mentally gave up around mile two when I saw that my second mile was a 5:35 after a 5:19 first mile. I knew that a sub 17 was out of the question, I knew that I was beat by these two guys and I just let the wind out of my sail. I ran a demoralizing 5:53 for the third mile and kicked it in with a 35 second last 0.11 mile (5:18/mile) for a new Trinity 5000 PR of 17:23 by one second. This was definitely not the way to run a 5K but given the 91F heat and the fact that I gave up on the run after 2 miles I'll take it. I got 3rd overall and won my AG which is good enough for today's VO2max workout.
