Thanks to everyone for sharing their info and tips. I'm dealing with hip pain too and am seeing a sports massage therapist tomorrow. I'm hoping he can help narrow down bursitis vs. IT band (or both). So far, ice and alleve haven't helped, but stretching and the foam roller seem to help. I'm running my first marathon at the end of October, and I think it's pretty common to run into issues like this during training. I've switched to swimming for the week to give it a rest.
Well I went to the sports doc today and left with a trochanteric bursitis diagnosis, had 2 cortisone shots and a script for an anti-inflammatory. I was also given some strecthes to do along with suggestions to modify my training until this subsides. Any updates in your condition, boston? Fishbowl
Thanks for the update! I am taking a week off from running...which is very stressful. I've been swimming or kayaking instead. I am just starting to see some improvement. I had an intense clinical massage last night and felt better afterwards. Swimming and streching seem to help too. It feels worst when I sit for a long time, which is the nature of my job. I will ease back into running this weekend with some short slow runs. Did the cortisone shots help? I am trying to get in to see a doctor but haven't been able to get an appointment until September 22.
