Inserts (Read 568 times)

Does anyone recomend sole inserts for running shoes and if so what kind?

Do a search. Should think you'll find some discussion in gears and wears forum. Try searching Superfeet or maybe it's Super Feet. A popular brand.

      Certifiably Insane

All depends on your foot, type of running, etc etc. You didn't state if you were having some troubles. I don't know if I'd start trying a bunch of things that aren't necessary. (Unless I'm going at this from the wrong angle, which has been known to happen.) If you have an issue with your feet, legs, knees, or lower back, get a referral to a specialist. You may need custom inserts or orthotics. If it's just something you've been thinking of trying, find a shoe store that specializes in orthopedic footware. There's one here in my town that can analyze your foot and make recommendations on what you need. They carry a large line of OTC inserts that aren't much more than the local Wal-Mart. You might need something as simple as an arch support, nothing at all, or just a different type of running shoe. (Support instead of cushioning.) I've been running in prescription orthotics for years. My feet have never felt better since I started using them.
On the road since 1978! "To be good is not enough when you dream of being great." I am not obsessed! I'm just INTENSE! "Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool." Why? Because race results stay on Google forever! (Reasonably recent) PR's: 5K - 16:40 10K - 35:04 HM - 1:18:30

I have used Superfeet in the past - with the stiffer arch support because that is what I need. But I like the New Balance Motion Control inserts. They have more cushion and support to them and last ALOT longer than Superfeet. I can use a pair of the NB ones for about 6-7 prs of shoes, so for me, that's about 3 yrs. But like the above poster stated, the kind of insole you need is based on your own need - if you have flatter feet, over pronate, etc. Like running shoes, all inserts are not made equal and what works best for one, might not work for another.

I am using SuperFeet in my Asics Kayanos. These inserts come in different levels of support and will run you about $35 per pair. While they won't last forever I am told I should expect about 1000 miles use which is about 3 pair of shoes. Go to a GOOD running store, not some crappy big box chain, and get fitted correctly.

            This is why I run

My Superfeet didn't last much more than 300 miles. I'm a big runner so that might have something to do with it. I found the arch support good in the green Superfeet, but the cushioning sucked (didn't last long). I was thinking of trying the Montrail custom insoles, the ones you heat in the over and mold them to you feet. Anyone have luck with those?

I just got a set of custom othotics. It's taking a while to get accustomed to them, but they seem like they will work. I ran for 5 years in Brooks Beasts with no problems. My advice is: don't use any orthotics unless you're having problems. The insert may not feel like it changes much, but a little bit can cause big issues.

I don't disagree with your advice, inserts are not for everybody. The ONLY reason I started using them is because after a 14+ mile run my ankles would hurt the rest of the day. I went to a local running store (NO BIG BOX SPORTS STORE) and they checked out my gait and feet and recommended SuperFeet F inserts. Since then I have had no problems.
