Do you consider yourself an athlete? (Read 95 times)

You Rang?

So I ran the Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon last week.  This was the first race I've ever run that was hosted by Competitor Group.  From the messaging in the Expo, the signature block on the waiver to the messaging at the race itself, it didn't take me very long to figure out that Competitor refers to its customers (those who gave them money to run) as athletes.

I'd never considered myself to be an athlete, and until I ran RnR LV, I hadn't even considered it.  Are you an athlete?

An amateur athlete, but an athlete nonetheless.  I train, I compete.

BTW, I see the word "athlete" used pretty much all the time by race organizers.

        Are we there, yet?

Of course. Runners are athletes. Why else would what we call track and field, including the marathon, be called athletics everywhere else.

           2024 Races:

                03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles

                05/11 - D3 50K
                05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour

                06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.

If you train and compete in a sport, you are an athlete.  Some would say you don't even need to compete, just the act of training makes you an athlete.  Personally, I do consider myself an athlete, an amateur one, but still an athlete.  I train and compete in my chosen sport. Smile

If I won $100 once, at a small race, does that make me a professional athlete?

I recently wrote a narrative about a kid's track program and called them athletes. I never considered myself an athlete until I ran 26.2 and in comparison to my non-running peers. I call us runners not athletes or competitors though.

I prefer runner, or cyclist depending upon what day of the week it is, but yeah I am an athlete.

I don't.  I might describe myself as athletic, but "athlete" seems to imply something more.

                              Life is good.

Yes. I feel the same way. I may exercise, but that does not make an athlete out of me.
