Question for you guys: do you like your current vocation? Did you "fall into it" or did you always know you wanted to be when you grew up?

Most days. If you told me in highschool or undergrad I would get a MBA and primarily work with numbers, I'd have laughed. Basically I deal with anything money related in a school program except for teaching math. I totally fell into this job many years ago.

No, kinda, and I don't think so but my mom claims I said when I was four years old that this is what I wanted to do.  In my defense, when I said that, I didn't really realize what it meant.

No. It's a job. There's been sort of a natural evolution over the course of my career. I've actually only worked for 2 companies in my professional career (which hey, in March will be 30 years). Looks pretty stable by today's standards, although have been subject to acquisitions and moves between company divisions, and I have relocated 5 times (if you count moving away after college). The best thing I can say about it is that it has kept food on the table.

Ha! There's a few people in my neighborhood who walk their dogs in the dark and put a light/reflective stuff both on themselves and the dog. So I'll see 2 lights coming toward me where one is moving around spastic and the other is steady. Always freaks me out for a second!

          Which is which?

And sometimes if the dog is not wearing a light, you still see the disembodied, floating eyeballs reflecting off your light.

Nobody really grows up wanting to be a payroll manager, but it pays the bills and allows me a good life. I don't mind it. I have little desire to move any higher up in the corporate food chain because that would mean more time working, and fts. Those people work late and work weekends.

Fell into it...  I'm a contractor working in the software development industry.  Being a contractor means I do whatever I'm told to do.  It pays the bills and allows me to do some extra curricular activities.  I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but I had better figure out soon.  Retirement will be here before I know it.

My job is a job. It isn't stressful or demanding. It's pretty flexible. I get paid okay and my boss works in another location.

I am a KM specialist at a law firm. It's fine.  (I'm not very career motivated) and oh yes,I fell into it.

when I run on my trail in the dark with a headlamp and see two glowing eyes staring at me it is a little freaky. Because you can't see the person who is holding their leash.

I always wanted to be a lawyer so yes.  I love that I don't have to worry about billing or staying in the office until 10pm so working for the government is icing on the cake.  Plus normally people listen when I speak in Court (not because of me but for who I represent, ha).  I was an accountant prior to this and that was something I hated.  I love numbers but not that work.

I would prefer not being tied up and not have some of the obligations that come with the job. But since I need to work to earn money, I really like my occupation. Been working here for 17 years, and will probably make it up to about 30 years (I'll be 60).

When I was working, my jobs were just a way of paying the rent and saving enough money to do what I really wanted, which was quit my job and go hike for 6 months or so. I did that five times. Some of the jobs were enjoyable, some boring as hell. Although I twice went back to a job after one of my hikes, it was always on a temporary basis, with the understanding that I wanted to do something different as soon as a replacement could be trained. I spent some time doing temp work, which had the advantage/disadvantage of constantly changing.

I'm a scientist at a large pharmaceutical company, doing research early in the drug discovery process. I always loved science and knew I wanted to do something toward helping people (i.e. medicine) but since I'm an introvert and can't imagine a career where I'd touch people all day long, I knew becoming a doctor wasn't for me. I spent almost my entire 20's in school so certainly didn't fall into it but feel incredibly lucky that I really really like my job. Challenging, rewarding, financially beneficial, etc.  I usually joke that the worst part of my work day is the commute.

I love my job. I'm an engineering professor. Not the kind of thing you just fall into, but it's not what I planned to do since I was a kid and I took some different starts and turns before finding what I wanted to do. Four years I left a tenured position at a research state university to take my dream job at a small private college that does some really cool and innovative things that I'm passionate about (see my avatar).

But I'm still not sure what I want to be when I grow up.
