Have a good run, Penguins, it's Friday... (Read 28 times)

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails!

What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

      Hi Pens...

I wanted to start today's thread with the words "Have a good run" because those were the words that my DD's XC coach always told the kids as they went off on their daily training runs. We found out earlier today that Coach died at work. He had a massive heart attack and someone found him in the bathroom. They had a special meeting at school tonight to tell the kids and when we pulled in at school we saw this:

This is a special torch on campus that is only lit when a current student or staff member died.  Even though our son went to school here we never really noticed this because it was never lit. We got here and DD said "Someone died."  My wife and I had never heard of this tradition at our local high school. Needless to say, the entire XC team is greatly saddened. Some of you might remember that I posted less than a year ago that one of DD's teammates died because of leukemia and now this.  I hate to be a downer but I feel a certain kinship with the Pens and that is why I have to share. Sorry for the downer.

I know you don't "know" me and you certainly don't know Coach, but for DD and me, go out today and "Have a good run."

          Morning Penguins!

Jack - sounds like he was a good coach and had a positive impact on the kids.

I ran 5 yesterday at lunch with the intention of getting some more miles at night but the rain came. It's supposed to rain all day today so I'll have to plan accordingly. The weather forecast says 80% chance of rain every hour - so that means there's a 20% chance of getting a dry run in! My easy pace is coming down, I just need to run more miles.

I'm so vegetarian I don't even eat animal crackers!

          Dad on the run.

Jack - Sorry to hear about this. My sister is in band and if your daughter looks up to her XC coach the way my sister does to her band director I think I can understand how your daughter feels right now. My heart goes out to the whole XC team and the coach's family. I promise tonight I will "have a good run" and run with you all in mind.

AFM - I posted a little late lastnight so not sure who all seen, I did 4 miles in crazy humid heat with a pretty high dewpoint so it wasn't the most fun run ever, also did day 2 of the 30 day shred. Stepped on the scale after work yesterday as that seems to be the most accurate time for me to check my body fat% and it was 17.4!!! It's slowly creeping down, hopefully by the end of the 30 days it will be somewhere in the 14-15% range.

              Bin, enjoy the rest day.

              Gustav, run in the rain!

              Jimmy, nice run.

Scotty I have a question for you because apparently you are the only one that will appreciate this, lol Smile

Well today is the end of my little 12-day streak.  I had been counting PT days as "rest days" since I only ran 1-1.5 miles, and I was running short enough distances that I didn't want to take another day off in addition, so I just ran all the non-PT days.  But finally my daily runs are getting longer, plus I have book club this evening and it would be a pain to get a run in.  So RD today, just my leg exercises and that's it.  I did get a 4.8 mile run in with the club last night.  It feels good to be back!

Jack- So sorry to hear about your daughter's coach.  I will definitely go out and have a good run in his honor tomorrow!

Bin- Enjoy the RD or recovery miles.

Gustav- Good luck getting your run in!

Jimmy- Nice job!  Glad you are seeing progress! Smile

D- Enjoy the run later.  Hope the storm has mostly passed by then.

Dan- Congrats on getting back to 30 miles!

                    More cowbell!

23 1/4 hilly miles riding last night.  1st time riding in awhile, but needed it b/c I got suckered into doing a 96-miler tomorrow.  Hills didn't feel too bad...but they didn't feel too good either.  Got caught by some rain (normal) and saw a funnel cloud almost form (not so much, especially in central Ohio).  Would have taken a picture if I didn't have a dumb phone.  But that sucker looked pretty menacing, and we went up a steep hill to try and avoid it.  Oh, and the local weathermen were saying that the accompanying tornado sirens were a false alarm.  With what I saw last night, the local authorities can just go ahead and keep erring on the side of caution.  I'm usually pretty laid back about emergencies and am wary of people crying wolf, but that cloud and my full and undivided attention last night.  Ok...mini-rant over.

Jack-Sincerely sorry to hear about your daughter's XC coach.  It sounds like he was one of the good ones. And I will have a 'good run' for him this afternoon.

                      Gustav-So you're saying there's a chance...

Bin, Damaris-Enjoy the easy miles today.

                      Dan-Congrats on 30.

Zelanie-Welcome back!!!  I agree, it really doesn't count when they keep the training wheels on.

                      STILL HAVING FUN!!!

Didn't had time to run but will definitely do an early run tmr.

Gustav, happy that easy pace is coming down.

Jimmy, hope you will be ripped in 30 days

Damaris, enjoy the recovery and running date with DH.

                        Dan, congrats on hitting 30.

Mel, seem like you are coming back nicely.

Jimmy - the hot and humid miles are never fun, but they help so much when things cool down.

Z - have an enjoyable rest day. The group run sounds like fun. I am happy that your mileage is coming back up.

Hello everyone -- a quick check in as I eat my lunch.

Jack -- sorry to hear about DD's coach

Damaris -- we received that package you sent -- you know, TS Andrea?  Lots of rain today, but the wind isn't too bad.  Today is a RD so at least I don't have to run through the downpour.

Coralie -- from last night:  I will second what Damaris is saying about the pace of your easy runs.  If you are out of breath, you are running too fast for an easy run.  Run by effort, not pace (which is harder to do on a treadmill since you have to set the speed).
