Hi. 6 miles on the Burke Gilman trail again. That's 4 days running in a row - been a long time since I've done that, I think late Feb. Still feeling good. Decided to pick it up the last mile, thinking I would do one at MP or something, instead I did it at 7:01, which is pushing 5k pace. Nice.

Alter g was interesting.
Deadlifting before hand jacked up my back though. Heavy duty meds on board!
So anyway, I spent the morning getting my stupid shin x-rayed and ultrasounded (is that a word?) and while the ultrasound revealed no blood clots the x-ray revealed a tibia stress fracture, three of them actually.
My attending physician dabbles in running but was unable to come up with a cause (based on what I told her) since the swelling and redness of my shin are not consistent with "normal" stress fractures. She thinks the redness is the result of some type of skin infection and prescribed an antibiotic just to be safe.
The severity of my injury and the prognosis for my return will be decided by an orthopedic specialist, who I will see next week. I said my return because I was ordered to the bench, indefinitely.
That stupid 5k next Saturday that I did all this training for the past three months is therefore out of the window. Next months mile race and two 10k' are also likely gonzo.
I am hopeful that June's goal 10k is not off the table but given the fact that it occurs 8 weeks from tomorrow I suppose it might be as well. That would leave my mile race on the 4th of July and I do not even want to think about missing that right now...
I thought this was all from hitting my leg on something but now am totally unsure about that. I do not have any other answers and at this point it's anyone's guess as to what happened.
I tried to do everything right but must have screwed up something somewhere and now will miss my most enjoyable time of the year to run easy, and the most important part of my race calendar. Fuck.
LRB, that is the worst news ever. I am so sorry!
PRs: Boston Marathon, 3:27, April 15th 2013
Cornwall Half-Marathon, 1:35, April 27th 2013
18 marathons, 18 BQs since 2010
I'm glad you got it checked out. But damn, that sucks, LRB.

My log entry from this morning sums up how I feel about this:
fuck
Sorry about that LRB. Heal up!
(bunch of bullshit)
Really sorry to hear about this, LRB. This sucks. Wish I could say something to cheer you up but all I can really do is offer my sympathy. I've been there, man.

Not cool here's hoping for a fast recovery.

LRB, I am crying inside for you. Total ass-suckage for sure.
Runner with a riding problem.
LRB, that is really crummy news. I totally feel for you and am sending you healing vibes. The only silver lining is that bones usually heal stronger than they were before, so although it's a completely frustrating setback, you WILL be back.
Life is good.
Wish I could say something to cheer you up...
Race your ass off next month!
race obsessed
Aw suck.
I was afraid of something like that LRB.
A shin knock shouldn't have been causing you the issue you described.
Did you also get a bone density scan/ report? I don't know how much calcium you get or your genetics. (personally I have a bitch of a time floating - heavy as fuck bones and I get a ton of calcium in my diet)
I have a training buddy (kona triathlete) that went ahead and ran Boston last year with tibial stress fractures in both legs. (not smart , he agreed) Take the time necessary to get that shit healed though.
And focus on softer surfaces when you start back.
On a side note:
I recommend needles in the ass for piriformis!**
** performed by a professional - not just randomly jabbing needles
(As an odd note: piriformis only seemed to affect my walking, sitting, standing and flexibility. Didn't slow my running or cause pain during running)
