Marathon Iowa 2014

    Good morning all.

Six inches of snow so far - so I took it to the gym.  The spin instructor was sick; did an hour on the eliptical instead.  What does it say about me that when given the choice of a rack full of magazines including bikini babes on the cover, I chose the magazine with a hazelnut torte advertising write-ups of the 12 best bakeries in Connecticut?  Just call me an easy target for food porn.

    Enjoy the day.

On Friday I'm headed for Michigan for a 4-day weekend.  That will be interesting being in all that snow.  2 feet is expected up there today and tomorrow.  I wish I could ski while I'm up there, the conditions will be ideal.  But I don't want to check any baggage.  DW thinks I'm nuts for even considering running.  But I can't imagine not running at all for 4 days.  But secretly I just want to "Erika-up".

6 slow miles this morning at 9:42 pace.  Average HR 128.  Max HR only 137.  I love running these slow, easy runs as I know I'll nail the harder workouts that they set me up for.

PBJ uh . . . maybe you ought to reply to one of those . . . er . . . lower end dysfunction drugs . . . just between food and cute women . . .  and you pick food . . .   Oh yea, good day for not running here too!  Snow, the freezing rain, and now a downpour.  Maybe I can get out later for a walk as it is supposed to clear up this afternoon.

breger1 a modest suggestion . . . tell whoever you are going to see everybody would be a LOT better off if they came to you!

evanflein I have been working in NYC since September.  My DW and I rented an apartment for the four months I was planning to spend here.  The gym is close to the temporary apartment.  But the gig is over, so we are heading back to CT.

Mariposai you don't have the original!  How gauche!

Bill- you should Erica up and master someone while out on the roads in Michigan.

PBJ-Thanks for a full laugh when I got to the line about food porn, we all have our weaknesses.

No run for me yet today, sidewalks, roads and trails are a mess here this morning. I did go on my first group run last night. 1.25 mile warm up, then 4.4 miles up and down the hill at the Cobbs Hill Reservoir and a 1.25 mile cool down back to Fleet Feet. I got to be social on the way to the reservoir, then continued to pass one runner on every uphill loop just to be passed by him every time we went back down. It was a good night and a run I probably wouldn't have done otherwise.

Watch your footing and those drivers today.

            Morning, gang!

Twocat - good to see you posting again, and welcome back to CT!  Good plan for NYC - the crowds were awful around the tree.  We made the mistake of going into the M&M World store to get out of the rain (and because we are M&M addicts).  We could hardly move - they had staff members with megaphones directing traffic up and down the escalators.  I don't think I'd do well if I had to live in a major city.

Craneium - glad you are enjoying your new running group.

We had several inches of snow on the ground when we left for work this morning - slow drive to work.  But once we reached the Groton area, we just had heavy rain and winds - no evidence that it ever snowed on the coast.  Good thing I brought the rain coat , but wish I had remembered the umbrella.

            6 miles @ 10:14 on the treadmill - 148 AHR.

Hope everyone stays dry and warm today!

            Renee the dog

Just lots of rain here this morning at the coast.  Got 4 mi in with Renee last night while my daughter was at swim practice, and my son was napping on the couch (a benefit of having a husband with an office in the house).

Today -- no motivation to get out there in the warm rain because it is coming down in sheets.  Hoping for a lighter rain this afternoon.  If so, I'll venture out. It's likely the last warm rain for awhile!

                  Good Morning!

Erika – good news about your foot.

Eliz – nothing hurts – yay!

                  PBJ –

Berger – you planning on running outside, with 2 feet of snow?

This storm that dumped so much snow on everyone else combined with a freak warm front here, so we got only rain, much to my kids’ annoyance.  52° this morning (yippee!), but with high winds and rain (drat!), so I stayed on the TM for 6 easy-paced (10:10) miles.  52° this morning will drop to 15° tomorrow, with 20-30mph winds to boot.  Gotta love Ohio for the variety.

With so many people out of work, I really am grateful to be blessed with two jobs.  And I am really enjoying H&R Block so far, and excited about the opportunity it provides.  However, I normally go to bed about 9pm, and this working 8-4 at my office job and then 6-9 at my tax job training is getting a little old.  I’m getting a little frazzled.  Last night I got home to find DH asleep, the kids still up, the house a mess, and homework not done (even after my careful instructions to get right on it before I left).  I spent 10 minutes stomping around and yelling at my kids, reading them the riot act while hustling them off to bed.  (sigh)  Only 2 more nights, though, and Saturday, and then no tax work until the following Saturday.  I actually get to come home and stay home every day next week!  Deez4boyz – I was thinking about you, how you do those 12-hour shifts all the time – my hat is off to you!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                  Tramps

We made the mistake of going into the M&M World store to get out of the rain (and because we are M&M addicts).  We could hardly move - they had staff members with megaphones directing traffic up and down the escalators.  I don't think I'd do well if I had to live in a major city.

But Sue, if you lived in the big city you'd know better than to go anywhere near the holiday tourist spots!

Holly--hang in there; you sure do have a lot on your plate.

I haven't dropped in for a bit so I'm out of touch.  Hope everyone's well.

I've been doing basic runs trying to maintain some fitness for a local 1/2 this weekend.  Should be fun, especially since Runningindc is coming down for it.  Today was 5.1 @ 7:57; a last little stretch-out MP pace run.

ETA: Walt, I just went back and saw your table pics; beautiful work!  I can't quite tell from the photo; how did you do the breadboard end?  Also, that looks like a snug workspace.  I hope you don't have to deal with sheet goods too often!

                    Be safe. Be kind.

Breger - you might want to invest in a pair of YaxTrax before your Michigan trip. We've gotten a foot and a half already and it's still coming down hard. With winds blowing 25-30 mph and blizzard warnings out, even the Y is closed today. I guess I'll be cross-training with the shovel. The plow came through and my DH can't even get through it with the snowblower. It really is beautiful - mother nature at her strongest. Will try to take some pictures and post them later.

Nice late post yesterday by WRFB. Where have you been, Beers? We miss you.

Holly - you are amazing. And I'll bet if I came to your house for dinner and drinks next week, you'd be all ready for Christmas with the decorating, baking and cleaning all done. I wish I had your energy. Hang in there these last few nights, and make sure to take extra care of yourself so you don't get run down and sick before the holidays.

Twocat - how did you enjoy your life in NYC? I'll bet that was kind of exciting. Or, are you anxious to get home? How is your recovery going, btw?

PBJ - your post made me laugh. Every time I look at the magazines at the Y, they're either diet/exercise related, or food/wine/gourmet cooking. What kind of mixed message do we send out when we're reading a holiday baking magazine while we're on the elipticals?

Nono - what are the big gifts on your kids' Christmas list this year?  Is your wallpaper project finished?

Came in to warm up - back out for  round 2 of the shovel job. This was the first storm of the season. It could be a long winter here...

                      Carolyn

Jeanne, if this is your first snow, and it's December, you don't know what a long winter is.   But I'd like to see your pictures.

I don't see any conflict between exercising and "food porn".  I mean, ya gotta eat.  And home-baked stuff is probably healthier than store-bought if you use good ingredients.

Craneium, nice run with the running group yesterday. I've never run with a group - there's one nearby that runs after work, but I always have to go pick up DD after school.  Maybe next year when she's in college...

My condolences to those of you with rainy weather.  Rain in the winter is just wrong.  I don't think it's rained here since September.

This morning it was -4° when I left the house, and still below zero when I got to work.  I heard it was -16 at the airport last night.  BRRR.  But the sun is out today and it's supposed to warm up to double digits today so I'll try for a RAL.  I brought my yax with me.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

                        Mariposai

great is the day we when have WRFB , twocat  and Tramps  sighting....boys...please know you were missed around here .

jlynne, I am envious of all all that snow you are getting. Here we just had a dust of snow on Saturday and that was it. It is 5F and sunny today.

holly, 12 hour shifts are hard, specially when there are still little ones in the home. Make sure you are taking some multivitamins during these stressful days...and it is OK to lower your standard RE: house cleaning, Xtmas preparations and such.  I am so proud of you.

Erika, good news about your running last night. oh...and just send me the plane ticket if you want me to paint your house for you.

Carolyn, how much snow did you get today. BTW, where in Colorado do you live? My son will be in Durango for the Holidays.

BQByll, you can always rent the skis there, just wear your snow clothes in the plane Smile

yeap twocat, gauche or not it still am so excited that I finally own a print of the water lyly...maybe I should start looking at the art index to see if it is profitable to buy originals and hold onto them...

Craneium, glad to see that you enjoyed your social run. Any girls in the group? just wondering if you can go "masters" on them also.

Walter, is that table for you or for sale? just lovely.

Aamos, wanna do Newport, OR in june with us? A bunch of us are planning to be there.

Lazy Posie today. I don't want to go out on that 5F...just lazy readying the last chapter of my book and then I will continue with painting. I am beginning to really enjoy wearing my painting overall as a uniform.

Nancy, thanks.... (& you added banananas Smile )   this is just what I wanted to say.   I was happy I finished yesterday''s daily because of the Beer & Twocat sighting...  ( Twocat, thank you so much.  it's been a tough couple of weeks and you made my day)...   and today more Twocat,, & Tramps.     yay.

don't have time to read everything else, but peaked a couple of time.   Holly, phew.  ((())).    Byll..... where???

gym this morning, 40 min. ellipticalling, 15 min. biking, lower body weights & was out of time.   50 min. snow/slush shoveling when I got home.

it's supposed to hit hard tonight.   but I say it's gonna miss us.   delusion is our friend!

                            Smile

Hiya!  I'll probably go to the gym again at lunch--it was still -5 at 8 am here, altho D. is suggesting going out for a few after work tonight.  We'll see...

Erika--I wanted to mention that on my long run Saturday, I got really nervous at one point as a spot on outer side of my foot started feeling sore.  I stopped several times and pressed on it, afraid it was a stress fracture and debating whether to stop.  Finally, I stopped long enough to retie my shoes, and sure enough, my foot felt better and I was able to finish.  It was a newer pair, first time I'd tried them for that distance, and I there was a pressure point, I guess, from the side eyelet.  So indeed, it very well could be the shoes, let's hope!

                              Hi Twocat!

Henrun, I read your friend's obit in the Globe today--he lived in an area I'm familiar with, having gone to Maynard HIgh and Framingham.  I noted he has a sister in Noho, too--I wonder if he'd run races there and if Karin might have met him.  What a loss; I am very sorry and sad for you and marj.

Holly, you're a saint.  I probably would have started throwing things.  Hang in there until the weekend.

I feel vindicated.  I've complained for years about how the City here does a horrible-to-no-show job at clearing the streets after snow (and I've lived in Mich., Mass., and Minn., all places with lots of the white stuff).  Today, the local paper published 6 large photos taken around town yesterday afternoon after most of our snow had hit, showing the deplorable conditions of the roads.  Yes!

Newport, in June, you say?  I will check that out.

Say, Maniacs--and/or folks who missed registering for Boston this year--a little town in Rhode Island is offering a marathon April 17 (2 days before Boston) that is totally time based entry wise (no charity runners).  http://www.exetermarathon.com/

                              grins,

                              A

                              Masters 2000 miles

Tramps - you are absolutely right. I live within 10 miles of the beach, but I don't go anywhere near it during tourist season.

nono - hope the weather clears long enough for you to enjoy the run.

I love reading the foodie magazines while I'm on the bike at the gym.  Sometimes I'm tempted to tear recipes out, but I resist and usually go out and try to find the magazine on the newstand if the recipe looks like a keeper.  I'm a cookbook/recipe junkie, but If I made and ate all of the recipes I've collected, I'd be as big as a house.   I volunteered to collate and publish favorite holidays recipes at work - I'm in seventh heaven with all of the recipes coming my way.

Mariposai - can't blame you for not wanting to go out with a temp like that - smart decision on your part!
