I was at that race...Susan does an AMAZING job... I can't believe anyone would complain. Very sad.
Awesome race, two thumbs up. Will definitely go back next year.
Or maybe you could vouch for me
MTA: I'm low-maintenance. I promise.

I guess that's the inevitable result of the rapidly increasing popularity of ultrarunning.
Bacon Party!
Sad indeed.
When I first learned about this trail running and ultra stuff (less than a year ago), I read the stories of yore and longed to be a part of this quirky peace- and earth-loving group. Now, as a participant, I'm concerned that things have grown too big - record crowds, lotteries, sponsorships and commercialism.
I picked up others' litter on the trail while running Rocky Raccoon this weekend (a race with a record number of participants), carting it however many miles until the next aid station. (Although, I should add that I did not witness or hear of any other bad behavior.)
Ghost Town is on my list of must-do events. I wanted to try for entry this year, but needed to get a 50-miler to qualify for Umstead (not wanting to be one to ask for special dispensation). I hope that I'm able to do it one day - and, even more, that the event continues even if I'm not.

From the letter and the followup discussion on the ultralist that the letter started, I don't think it will be very difficult to get into GT - she wants a good mix of new and returning runners after all, but is just trying to minimize the headaches and heartache of a few bad apples.
On another note, I don't think all of the problem people were necessarily runners - some were just spectators that came to support a runner. My guess is that the problematic non-runners probably came with the problematic runners so hopefully eliminating that hurdle drastically reduces the issues then and there.
I don't think I'm going to be in a situation where I can travel next January, but I have some friends about 3 hours from GT so hopefully in 2012 or 2013 I can get out for the race.

LOL!! I actually got my invite already (and Susan gave me a giant hug when I left), so I think I'm good.
It's like going to mom's house for the weekend. The food she makes us is AMAZING!
I'm sold...heheh.

Sorry Blaine, I should have credited you for that link.

Happy
Being mindful and respectful of those that have put their heart and many hours, weeks, and/or months into preparing the race and the event complete with food, drinks, ribbons and markers etc etc is important. So often people are rude - I count myself in that group too. We tend to forget that not everything is corporate and owned by some faceless entity physically far removed from the location of business - rather, there are small "businesses" that are owned and operated by the owners themselves and or a few family members or employees that are trusted. They do all the hard work including paying the bills and dealing with all the legal matters and much more. They provide the framework and make it possible for us to enjoy the day in a relatively carefree manner. Let us not litter - with foul language or otherwise.
Thanks for bringing this issue to our awareness.

No worries - you linked and that was credit enough. I just wanted to weigh in with my thoughts.
Susan did 99% of the work there anyway...I just saw a great topic on the ultralist and asked her if I could share it. I thought it was a good letter and my operating assumption is that a very very small percentage of my newsletter are on the ultralist, heheh.
