    Sprinkles - You got this

I decided that I am going to taper this week and race on Saturday.  Taking today off and will do 12 tomorrow real easy and keep it easy next week.  I've got this spot on my adductor on the left side that makes me nervous so gives me time to get it worked out.

I love when my parents come up for a visit, I get suitcases of stuff from the states, took advantage of some running warehouse clearance deals Smile

Late check in for me.  7+ miles at the high school track this morning.  Ran them at 9:07 average pace which felt pretty effortless.  I'm starting to believe that I might really be past my injury.  Went to the expo with DH and ended up with a travel version of "The Stick".  That will come in handy this summer.  Gorgeous with sun and 70s today.

Congrats Flinders!  That's an awesome time!

Go Sprinkles!  Smoke those sparkle skirts!

Indi:  Hope the leg cooperates for you on your 20 tomorrow.

Nice running all!  The donuts appear to all be headed in the right direction right now.

      Smashy!!!

        Hey all,

Ami, great pacing on your LR. I actually find it fun to try to hit my paces spot on. It's kind of a game with me.

Sprink, have no real advice about what to wear tomorrow. Except, I too don't like being hot. I'd rather be too cold than too hot. So maybe the long sleeve with shorts? Or a sparkle skirt? good luck tomorrow!

Flinders, nice rewards. Crushed a Milk n Cookies last night (thanks Sprink for introducing this flavor to me). Mojo's back. But I think I've got to tread cautiously from here to the race, as my legs feel beat up a little. I'm gonna follow the rest of the schedule, but I'm gonna slow down the pace on quality days, and cut back on some mileage.

Josh, new gear is always fun.

Nachos, big win over Zona. But the loss of Adams is HUGE. We just can't seem to get a break this year.

Good luck to all our racers tomorrow!

          Hi, guys.  How  is everybody?

Good luck to those racing tomorrow!  I tried to read the 3 pages I was behind on but  if I missed anybody's race result, I apologize.

My husband starts working on Tuesday which means I won't be doing the Paris Marathon, boo hiss.  I now have to find a race for April (ha!).  Looking at a 50K in Florida that I can do without the need for travel.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

          Rusk Runner

Okay guys, here is where I am at and I am asking for advice.

The weather has taken a turn for the worst and sleet has started to collect on the streets.  Weather report is calling for up to 4 inches of snow.  I am wondering if this is Gods way of telling me to listen to my body, as I really do not think I should run today.

I have been having some issues with my lower leg ( calf and shin ) and I was going to start seriously icing, rolling, etc. after today's scheduled 20 miler.  This would have been my last of 3 20 mile runs, and I ran the last two over 21 miles.  Completion of today's run would have officially kicked off my 3 week taper period.

I am thinking that skipping the last 20 today and then doing all of my runs through the week at recovery pace would be a better idea.  I have a 16 mile run scheduled for next Sunday which I will do on a chip trail in Pensacola which would reduce the pounding on my legs and would still qualify for another long run.

I have executed Pfitz 18/55 pretty well to the letter this time through with only one or two missed runs.  Its my feeling that I can miss today and still go after my goal pace.

            What do  you guys think?

            Ball of Fury

Indy:  I think you already know the answer....rest your injury!  You have already put in the training, you are going to kill it in 3 weeks, but only if you rest and recover.  I think if it were one of us, you would tell us to take the rest day!  It was a bummer about the game, but hopefully they will perform better in the big dance.  I think they may now be a number 2 seed though.

Sprinkles:  Good luck today!  If it were me and it was 30, I would do long sleeves...but I am a cold wimp!

Josh:  Nice shoes!  Sorry the weather is so horrible up there, but I don't think it's a terrible plan to adjust your training and race your HM next weekend.  At least then you will know exactly where you stand and can plan for your FM accordingly.

Flinders:  Congrats again on such a great race!  And, now I want ice cream!

MDawg:  Sounds like you are doing great!!  Good luck to your DH today.  And yeah, super jealous of your weather.

Docket:  Good luck today!  Bummer about Paris, though.

CBus:  Nice 7 yesterday....so glad you got your mojo back.  DH has been feeling really run down the past 3 days, with dizzy spells and just no energy.  He has tried to run, but it hasn't been going well.  I am trying to encourage him to take a couple days off and used you as an example...hope you don't mind.

Well, I have finally figured out the secret to really slowing down my recovery runs!  Here is what you do:  You run your long run on a Saturday, and then instead of hydrating and re-fueling properly, you head to the casino and start drinking around 2 PM.  You also stuff yourself with BBQ and fries.  You then continue drinking and gambling for around 6 hours.  You then head home, and go ahead and pick up a Baconator Junior (at least it was the junior) and fries from Wendy's and eat that too.  You then get up at 4:30 AM to do your run because you have to be at work at 7:30 for 12 hours....that's how it's done.  But, hey, I did get in 5 painful, pathetic miles @ 10:18/mile so there!  It is supposed to snow here today, which is just a bummer, because seriously, it got up to 63 yesterday!!  Have a fantastic Sunday Donuts...Happy St. Paddy's day!

Of course you are correct amik, but it really drives me nuts to miss a run (especially a long run.  It seems like validation from those that I converse  all things running makes it easier for me to accept.

I am kind of obsessive about my sticking to schedule.  I dont think I am alone in this am I?

It looks like you answered your own question. I'll only add to look into PT or Graston for that nagging injury, if you can't get it straightened out on your own.

Indy: Take the day off, and ice and roll as necessary.  I'd actually be more worried about the weather than the aches. cmb's slip and fall showed us how treacherous wintery weather can be.   At this point in your training cycle, the aches and niggles are to be expected. Your training is in the bag at this point, so the maxim from here on out should be "First, do no harm."

Cbus: glad your mojo is back!

Ami:  Sounds like you had a blast yesterday!

Hi Docket!  Smash your race today!  You, too, Sprinkles!

That is a lot of exclamation points. I'm taking the day off, but might go for a long walk later if the weather is nice.

I signed up for a full over Memorial Day weekend, so I'll throw it out how I should approach training for it.  I have 10 weeks from today until the race.  I don't really think I should go for an aggressive goal time, but if I keep my volume up in the 50s where it was for the six-plus weeks before last week, and run LRs of 16, 16, 13 in three week mesocycles, a faster run of some sort (with me, it will probably be a tempo-ish/fartlek-type run) per week, and with a 10-day taper I should be able to knock a couple of minutes off my PR.  (If I manage to average 40mpw over nine weeks before taper, I'll have run more volume than I did for an entire 18-week cycle before my last race).  Thoughts?

Flinders - If you feel the 16's will have your endurance up, I say go for it.  You are a strong runner to begin with and your mileage has been great.  Thanks for the advice.  At this point my leg is a bit more than an ache.  I can run on it, and I could force a marathon out of it, but it certainly would not be ideal.

Thanks.  I tend to be a bit aggressive, so I may try to go for it, just to see.   I may adjust training on the fly and add some 18s later on if I feel I need more endurance.  Based on the half I just ran, McMillan +10 is a 3:35, so I think that is a reasonable goal...my last full ended up being McMillan +8 off of choppy training.

As for your leg, as Cbus said, I think you have answered your own question and probably should rest it, so you can race the marathon and not merely force it.

Indy:  +1000 to Flinder's comment of "Do no harm.".  The hay is in the barn for your training.  The chances of you injuring yourself and not being able to run the marathon are pretty good if you're already compromised.  My opinion...do not run the 20 today.  And yes, I'm uber schedule oriented so I totally get that part of it.

Flinders:  I say go for it.  Your mileage is high and 10 weeks is enough time sine you don't have to build up.

AmiK:  Yeah...that'll force you to run recovery pace.  Girl, I would be in the hospital if I tried that!

                          Docket:  Go get 'em today!

5 easy miles on my beloved hills today at an average 9:56 pace.  Maybe some faster paces this week since all seems to be going well.  Nothing crazy though.  Maybe a few tempo miles thrown into a weekly run.  DH did great this morning.  1:40:22!!!  So proud of him!!  These are hilly courses and he's running very strong on them.  He may try a flat FL course next month just to see what he can really do.

Flinders, your plan sounds fine. You'll be ready.

Indi - Same boat here, weather is even worse today than what I read last night.  I'm just going to hop on the TM and take it easy and put as many miles in until I feel like blowing my brains out.  Plus gives me a chance to play with my new shoes.  Got this spot on the inside on my quad that just won't go away and I know running in the snow will irritate it.
