first time doing the elmhurst fourth of july race. even the watch had me a bit longer than 4. race was kinda weird and i'm not very thrilled about how it ended up but given the past week or so i guess it would be hard to expect my body to feel better. race started abruptly after this guy walked in front of us adn blew this air horn. it didnt look like he was going to start the race and all of a sudden he did and we were all like what the fuck. took off anyway and sat behind phil who was sitting on chris may, who was sitting on eric from NB. it stayed like this through the first two miles. aerobically i felt pretty good, especially as the pace slowed the second mile, but my legs were kinda tight and my breathing seemed a bit off. after the turnaround phil made a huge move and chris covered. i let them gap me initially and then going up the small hill right before the 3rd mile mark i caught them. however, by this point my left calf had started to tighten pretty bad like it did yesterday and pretty soon after hitting the 3rd mile mark it was creeping up my leg to my hammy and hip. basically at the 5k i just straight called it. i split my watch and starting jogging basically. i was really pissed with myself but i was so tight if i had continued to run fast i was risking it and last year around this time i got hurt from overdoing it so i didnt want that to happen again. ended up letting phil and chris go way ahead. and then pretty soon eric and some dude named lionel passed me and i just let them go. frustrated but i have long-term in mind instead of some random race i got in for free. hard to swallow pride but will be worth it come november. splits were like 457, 501, 458, 542 for last bit
