Microbrew Mile 2k18- 2nd in 4:15- great effort but lost a close race in the extreme heat

Ran 12 this morning to make sure I was getting close to long run mileage today. Ended up being an extremely hot day- 97ish at race time with heat index in the 100s. Legs felt good after warming up and dynamics. Accidentally false started at the start but took a step back before we actually started so made up for my mistake. I'm so used to on your marks and then the gun so when they said on your marks and then all set, I was expecting Go so I jumped. Still ended up getting out fairly well. Got out in 3rd and sat there behind mascari and Alex (348 1500 guy who won from Robert morris). Stayed behind them through basically 800. Thought the clock said 215 at the half but I guess we were at like 210 so I was probably 211. I went around mascari and worked up to Alex. Got up to him and passed him around 400 out. Moved ahead and went to the inside approaching the 2nd to last turn so that he would have to go around. He ended up cutting the turn a bit which was B.S. and it forced me out. At that point we were all out kicking. The last turn a few seconds later I was behind him because of the ground I had lost on the previous turn. I planned on turning wide and going on the outside but the pace car went wide and they had that part of the road coned off which made for a really narrow finish. It forced me to cut back inside and go all out the last 60 meters trying to pull even. He kept moving left which pushed me over further left and I ran out of room to pass and just lost by a hair at the line. Frustrating to lose but still ran fast in the heat and after running 12 hilly miles this morning. I'll take a 415 road mile in 100+ heat index weather in midst of a 85 mile week. Overall good experience but disappointing finish. Splits were roughly 211, 204
