1k-2k-3k-2k-1k-2k w/2’-3’-4’-3’-2’ rest. I was pumped when I saw this on the schedule almost purely because of the standing/non-jogging rest. My legs, however, were feeling the last few week’s training. I slugged through the warm up and had the classic “I can’t do this.” Thinking going on before I even took a stride in the workout. 2:59.6 for the opening rep was promising. I was possibly a little too relaxed on the second rep coming through the mile in 4:54.4 and tried to pick it up but the second half of the 3k loop around trueblood is fairly winding and it was hard to get a good rhythm. 6:07.2. I was quickly to the peak of the workout and knew it would be roughly one circuit so I worked on land marks as I went. Through the mile in 4:52.0, but again the frequent turns at the north end of the loop ruined my cadence and I slowed, pace-wise I was roughly the same as the 2k before, 9:12.5. I pushed it on the following 2k, the 4’ rest was great and I was mostly recovered by the time it came to take off. I was through the mile in 4:49.4 and ran 6:01.2. One last time through the annoying turns and I did what I could but only ran 3:02.5. The last 2k was optional and after the very first 2k I was questioning whether i should do this “bonus” rep or call it. Things hadn’t fallen off and I didn’t feel as bad as I did early so figured why not. Saw a familiar mile split, 4:52.3, and tried to push from there. The oddest thing happened in that last 300m. My breath got a little short, like my throat was tightening up, it was a little bit frightening and and might have let off the gas some but ran 6:05.8. Outside of that freaking feeling at the end, the workout as a whole was a great practice in half marathon effort. I felt like I could keep going to a degree but should prove to be beneficial for that upper level aerobic adaptation.
