49er Classic, 3rd. Awesome night aside from a soaked track from the downpour during the warm up. 55 degrees, ~5mph wind. Couldn't ask for much better. Didn't have any real expectations going in. Knew there would be a fair amount of pace shock but what I was not prepared for was the low IQ of the field. For a bunch of college kids they sure ran like high schoolers. Near the back for the first 800, going 2:20. Stayed within my own rhythm which just so happened to be 70 and change. 4:42 through the mile and moved up a pack. After 2k I moved to the main chase pack but didn't rush to do it. 9:24 through the 2 mile so I was running super even. I made a concerted effort to pick up the pace at 1200 to go but nothing really changed. Stayed at 70s and change. With a k to go I moved into second to get myself out of the traffic. Held the rail all the way until 3 miles. Couldn't tell you what the split was but wouldn't surprised if it was 14:08. Didn't catch Adam who had sprung to an early lead and managed to get my no-speed-having-ass out kicked in the home stretch by 1 sec. very pleased with the result this evening, good indication of fitness and should be another good stepping stone moving forward.
