2 sets of 14x1 min on- 1 min off (ideally at 5:30) w/4' jog between sets. Went to Hell in a handbasket this morning. Mother Nature is a bitch. Raining/Sleeting and 27 degrees. I was planning on going to Riverside but didn't want to risk the potential of slipping on ice since its been freezing rain since last night. Ran the entire workout in lane 1 of the track at TU. The on paces were supposed to be about 5:10 but with such short intervals I had trouble controlling the pace, eventually, I just interpreted it as "run hard." A better way to describe this workout would be 2x 28' tempo since there was no real let up. Set #1 pace per mile: 5:10/5:32, 4:55/5:29, 4:52/5:30, 4:53, 5:33, 4:45/5:25, 4:52/5:25, 4:48/5:20, 4:53/5:32, 4:48/5:28, 4:47/5:27, 4:47/5:32, 4:47/5:29, 4:43/5:24, 4:45/5:21. (5.46 miles in 28', 5:08/mile) Not even halfway through the first set my tights were absolutely wringing wet. The cold air gave the effect of having ice bags literally strapped to my quads, calves, and hamstrings. It was like running in an ice bath. I took my merciful 4 min jog and felt a small rally come on but when I started up again my frozen legs had little response. 4:56/5:28, 4:51/5:36, 4:57/5:27, 5:05/5:36, 5:05/5:27, 4:59/5:34, 4:55/5:33, 4:54/5:37, 4:50/5:48, 4:45/5:41, 4:57/5:44, 4:57/5:32, 5:01/5:41, 5:02/5:21. (5.34 miles in 28', 5:16/mile)I have not suffered like that in a very long time. Part of it was hitting the on's much faster than intended (but once I was in it, I was in it.), and part of it was my legs were frozen solid for the second set. There were times where I could not feel anything below my hips and I was just hoping that the frozen blocks I was flinging around the track wouldn't strain or tear.
