Wow what a silly race. Jake and I started in the front with seemingly no one else taking this seriously, or going faster than walking pace. There were a few people in costumes we figured would at least sprint the first straight.

I spent the entire first straight laughing and trying to go fast. The guys in costumes were actually keeping up too. Rounded the corner, avoiding people as I went cause we were the ones clearing the course. Tough to make the turns with all the brick ground too. Rounded the final turn and a couple costume guys were still with me! Had to work hard to shake them. They finally lost steam halfway down the straight. One actually beat me and almost beat Jake. Found out they were all rugby players.

I got a good initial pace but struggled to accelerate at all. My top end is really lacking. Once I get my consistency down I should really do some speedwork. Not sure if it will come before more "core" workouts like fartleks and tempos though. Maybe once I get into workouts I will do one day a week endurance workout, one day speed workout? Not a bad idea. And do some more strides ( / hill sprints?) too.
