Notes
3K at GVSU Eubanks. First race of the season. Was not sure what kind of shape I was in coming in, so my only goal was to go for it and see what happens. First lap was slow, but then the North Central guys picked it up. I was hearing 51-52 so I knew we were clicking off a solid pace. Around lap 4 I made my only tactical error. I went around Caleb to close a gap to Tyler instead of relaxing for a bit. Normally that's not a bad move, but in a 3K where you are riding the red line closely it may have not been the right call. Was with Tyler through 2K (we came through 1500 in 4:22-4:23), but ending up fading from there. Kick was not super strong either. First half of the race felt pretty smooth and people said I looked strong. I tightened up a bit the second half and faded. It's only the first race and I ran about 15 seconds faster than last year's first 3K. Was hoping to be closer to 8:50. Given how smooth 8:45 pace felt the first half of the race, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to run that at the end of indoor. I dropped 15 seconds last indoor season from my first to last 3K. Problem is I won't have many opportunities because of grad school interviews. So life goes. Not my best race tonight, but it's just the beginning of the season and we have a long ways to go still. The times will come!
