Notes

5k at MSU. I was in the slowest of the 3 heats of the 5k. The wind was very strong today, probably around 25 mph on the homestretch. Today was a very good learning experience. I got myself into good position at the start and was drafting off people. We came through the first mile in 5:08 and came through 1.5 in 7:45, but I don't know splits after that. I made my wrong move with 6 laps to go. I went to the lead, but I was not confident in my move and really did nothing decisive. I just became a wind block for 3 other guys and then a guy from Ferris State made a strong move with 3 or 4 laps to go (can't remember exactly). The wind had drained my energy and I just couldn't go with him. I stayed with the other two guys for 1 more lap, but the last 800 was horrendous. I mentally broke and lost all form and strained hard. I heard my penultimate lap was an 87...ouch. I had the energy and the ability to win my heat today and was on pace to run around 16:00-16:05 for 2.5 miles which with the wind would have been very solid, but I just used my energy poorly and payed for it. I really didn't follow Deimer's directions of being patient and really should have gone at 1200 to go with the Ferris kid. I also have to continue to develop keeping good form and staying relaxed even when things are not going my way because I still would have ran solid had I just kept better form. Had a good talk with Mckee on the bus on the way back and really helped me figure out how I need to prepare for races in college and how to run the times I want to run.
