Tracksmith Twilight 5k at Saline High School. 1st in heat 5 (of 6) and 14th overall. Kind of humid evening but it was much more bearable once the sun went down. Latest race I've done since college and first true track race since probably the 1st or 2nd year of grad school. We were jokingly calling our heat the the Fall Marathon heat as it sounded like 80% of our heat was training for a fall marathon as their goal. Figured I was in about 15:45 shape but thought it was safe to go out at 16:00 pace and see what I could do. Pacer got us out a little quick the first 400 but then we settled into 76-77s with a few 75s in there. One guy in our heat decided 1k in that it wasn't fast enough and went off in front by about 20 meters. We brought him back by halfway, had no clue what his plan was in a race with a pacer. Pacer stepped off around 3k and I had the lead. Kept the pace consistent and looked back only to see Charlie and that was it. Kind of surprised we dropped everyone else. Lost track of laps for a bit here but got back on with 3 laps to go. Pacer jumped back on with 1k to go and took us for another lap. Started winding it up with about 500 to go. Was able to separate from Charlie a bit on the last lap with a 68 close and take the heat win. Happy that Charlie smashed 16 right behind me though! Fun evening, nice to see everyone. Speed these days is very much lacking but I felt aerobically strong so taking a lot positives with this forward in training!
